Accessibility
Website accessibility has become a buzz word over the
last few years with many people referring to standards and
guidelines, but in reality very few people actually understand
what constitutes an accessible website.
In essence accessibility means a website or intranet should be accessible to
people with limited dexterity, low vision, or other disabilities.
Website Accessibility Standards Overview
The Disability Discrimination Act came into force on October 2004 and states
that website owners should take 'reasonable steps’ to make their sites
accessible by disabled users or provide a reasonable alternative method of
providing the service.
Although this legislation is rather vague accessibility is about understanding
and supporting the needs of the people who visit your website. A well-designed
site will remove the barriers that may prevent people from entering and using
it.
We recommend compliance with existing accessibility guidelines such the W3C
accessibility guidelines and the bobby approved standards. These guidelines try
to ensure that a website will provide the same level of experience to
everyone who visits it, regardless of his or her level of ability or
disability.
Is Your Website Accessible?
Pin Digital can provide a full audit of your website to help expose barriers to
accessibility based upon the WC3's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0. We
can then help to advise and implement change to ensure your
website doesn't fall foul of the Disability Discrimination
Act.
