9 out of 10 UK internet connections are now broadband

24 September 2007

9 out of 10According to an Internet connectivity report issued this month by the Office for National Statistics nearly nine out of ten connections to the internet in the UK are now via broadband.

The latest quarterly update from the survey of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) revealed that in September 2007 broadband connections accounted for 88.4 per cent of all Internet connections, up from 86.2 per cent in June 2007.

The number of users connected to the internet via broadband has more than doubled from 38.2 per cent since the Office for National Statistics started recording figures in September 2004.

The survey also revealed that at 49.2 per cent, almost half of those connected via broadband now enjoy connection speeds in excess of 2MB. This is an increase from 47.2 per cent in June 2007 and 37.5 per cent in December 2006.

In 2007, nearly 15 million households in Great Britain (61 per cent) had Internet access, and with the competition between broadband providers showing no sign of slowing this figure is almost certainly set to rise to 2 in 3 UK households by 2008.
