Online shopping tops £4 billion per month
27 August 2007
July 2007 saw online sales in the UK breaking £4 billion for the first time ever. According to IMRG, the leading e-retailing industry body, ecommerce sales for July 2007 reached £4.2 billion. That’s £1.86bn higher than the figure for July 2006, an increase of 80%.
By contrast according to the Office for National Statistics, sales of goods on the high street grew to just 3.3 per cent during July to an average weekly value of £5bn, the equivalent of roughly £20bn a month.
The very wet weather, increasing consumer confidence, competitive online pricing and the rise in the number of UK homes with an internet connection were cited as some of the reasons for the surge in online sales.
According to Forrester Research the UK is now
Europe’s biggest market for online shopping.
