Companies required to update websites and email footers before 2007

Companies in the UK will be required by law to include certain regulatory information on their websites and in their email footers before 1st January 2007.

The First Company Law Amendment Directive will come into force on 1st January 2007, and by this date companies will be required to put the following information on their website and business emails:

  • Company registration number
  • Place of registration
  • Registered office address

Companies will also be required to have the following information on their website:

  • The name, postal address and email address of the website's service provider.
  • The name of any trade bodies or professional associations that the business is member of, including membership or registration details.
  • VAT number, even if the website is not being used for e-commerce transactions.

There is also a requirement that where companies include prices on their website the prices must be clear and state whether they include or exclude tax and delivery.

Companies failing to display this information could are at risk of breaching the Companies Act and face a fine.
