What's with all the packaging these days?

I just wanted to take a few minutes to have a moan about excess packaging when ordering online. Just recently we bought some more licences for Windows Server, and I couldn't believe it when they arrived.

As you can see, all that we recieved was a few A4 (ish) size card envelopes, each containing a licence number.  Nothing but a couple of bits of paper. but the box these came in was huge and full of air filled plastic to cushion it all.

I suppose in an ideal world these should have just been emailed to me but at worst why not just pop these bits of paper in an envelope? Why do companies feel the need to use such vast amounts of packaging and protective materials when there's clearly no need?

Don't get me wrong I'm no eco warrior (as people know from the car I drive, but you have to have some pleasures in life!) but I try to do my bit, and it really annoys me to see so much waste especially when none recyclable plastic is involved.  As a company we recycle as much as we can and I don't like to see anything thrown in the bin. So when we receive deliveries like this is really frustrates me.

Don't even get me started on none recyclable plastic packaging that you can't get in to without scissors, and slicing your hand on the freshly cut razor sharp plastic!  And i can't even have yoghurts any more because I can't bear to throw the plastic pots in the bin!
