We often get clients ask us questions about social media and how it affects their online business. The most common question we get is – “Should we have a Facebook and Twitter account?”Our answer is pretty much the same everytime – “it depends”

The answer isn’t as simple as yes or no. It genuinely does depend on the client and the market they are working in. We work with many clients across varied industries, some B2C and some B2B, some both.
We tend to get asked this question by clients who we currently run SEO...

Following on from my post last week about getting traffic from Google Base, I wanted to continue talking about non-SEO ways to get traffic. This week I’d like to talk about Google Local search. To give you a bit of a background, businesses are able to register their details with Google which gives them the opportunity to appear on search results which Google believe are related to a users location. Classic example being if someone searches for “hotels in Birmingham”, then you get results like the screenshot below. Registering your business with Google g...

Sometimes in the world of SEO, you can get too deep into the technical side of things. It can be very easy to concentrate too much on getting long term results in the organic results which means you can forget about the other ways of getting quality traffic to your website. Don't get me wrong - a long term SEO strategy is one of the best marketing tactics there is. However don't overlook the quick wins that can bring an increase in traffic in a shorter timescale. So in light of this I thought I’d talk about some of the alternative ways of getting traffic to your w...

So there I was flicking through the latest issue of Web User Magazine on my lunch earlier (as any geek does on their lunch!) and I spotted this -
That was a nice surprise! Following on from their Hitwise Award a few weeks ago, Go Outdoors have been included in the list of the "Best New Websites" online by Web User Magazine. Needless to say, we are very pleased that the new Go Outdoors website has been well received not only by their customers but also by an industry magazine.

I was fortunate enough to be able to speak at the latest Think Visibility conference at the Alea Casino in Leeds over the weekend. Once again it was a great conference that is very different to others that I’ve been to, also the fact this was my first ever speaking slot at a conference made it even more interesting (scary!) for me.Think Visibility focuses on “the items that usually get left out of the web process” and attracts a wide range of attendees from SEO companies, design and development companies, as well as self-employed affiliate marketers. It is differe...

Last week I travelled down to London for the SEOmoz/Distilled Pro Training. It was the first time that the training had made the trip “across the pond” from Seattle where it is normally held. It was a great conference and the guys did a great job of the organisation and the presentations given were all very advanced.
I’ve summarised my top 10 actionable points from the conference below which hopefully you will find useful.
1. Will Critchlow gave several talks, one of which was on Google Analytics. He talked about a cool Excel add-on calle...

Filed under link building, google webmaster videos
I've often thought about how the position of a link on a webpage can affect its ability to pass trust and PageRank. We've all seem websites which have horrible looking footers or headers which seem to be stuffed with useless links to bad quality external websites or internal pages which are being targeted with keywords. The way these links are presented isn't always very helpful to the user, if this is the case, then it would make sense that Google gives less value to these links than they would to links right in the middle of the page or in the middle of content.
In his latest Go...
